Catherine W. Bishir Papers, 1976-1992

Catherine Ward Bishir was born in 1942 in Lexington, Ky., daughter of Margaret Norris Byrn Ward (1912-1993), a home economics teacher, and William Smith Ward (1907-1994), a professor of English at the University of Kentucky. She received her B.A. from the University of Kentucky in 1964 and her M.A. from Duke University in 1965. Since 1971, she has been involved in architectural history and historic preservation planning, chiefly under the auspices of the North Carolina Division of Archives and History, where, as of 1995, she was Architectural Survey Coordinator. Materials, circa 1976-1990, chiefly relating to Bishir's publications, most of which concern architectural history, architects, and historic preservation, particularly in North Carolina. Most items pertain to either North Carolina Architecture (with Tim Buchman, 1990) or Architects and Builders in North Carolina: A History of the Practice of Building (with Charlotte V. Brown, Carl R. Lounsbury, and Ernest H. Wood III, 1990).Included are letters, financial and legal materials, notes, and publicity materials. Also included are a number of Bishir's shorter works on architecture and historic preservation, as well as a few files relating to meetings and conferences of several professional organizations in which she has been active.
